A 4-Month-Old Baby's Development (Week 13)

Find more about the developmental milestones that a baby is expected to attain by 13th week of her development.

Your infant is growing stronger day-by-day. By 13 weeks, babies start battling with their favorite toys when come into the field of their vision. By now, they can recognize their favorite toys. They have also started recognizing their near and dear ones, so they would tend to throw their arms out of excitement when they get to see you, your partner and a few other people who they consider as their favorite.

New Routine

By the last week, you must have noticed that your baby needs more feeding that wakes her up in between her sleep hours. As your baby is growing faster now, she needs to eat more as she is also able to digest faster now, making you rush for diaper changes. By now, you must have got into a new routine that includes more of feeding during the day time to enjoy a goodnight’s sleep without any hindrance. Frequent feeding at daytime encourages nighttime sleep.

Teething

By 13 weeks, your baby has started feeling her teeth. You may not get to see her first tooth until few more months, but she is already feeling her teeth starting to poke their way out of her gum. Teething can be a tough experience for babies now – they can have red cheeks due to pain, can dribble a lot, but some lucky babies undergo teething without any issue at all. You can comfort your little baby with some teething rings that feel great when cooled off in the refrigerator.

Touch

By week 13, your baby is developing a new sense of touch. Babies, by now, tend to touch almost everything around them as they are trying to discover the feel of different textures around them, as their brain is making a multitude of connections at every second. You can see your baby is so curious when you give her different texture materials to play to enhance her further experiences.

Motor Skill Development

Your baby’s neck is getting stronger as she is having more tummy time, and tummy time is really ideal to make their muscles strong and improves their motor skills. Your baby still needs few more months to hold her head up for long, so you may need to dive your nose into changing her mat position to normal posture. You will also notice improved coordination in throwing hands and legs. Babies are in full motion now in moving their hands and legs in a more coordinated manner.

More Curiosity

Babies in week 13 are more fascinated with their own hands, and they try to bring them close to their mouths. If you give them new toys, they would be attracted to their bright colours and would tend to inspect their toys with their eyes and mouth. The sense of cause and effect has also improved now, so they know that if they hit something, it would move. So they try all such new things now – to rattle with dangling toys and check how they move. Their curiosity helps them boost their brain.

Tips and Tricks

You may feel uncomfortable while breastfeeding your baby now as she would develop the teething in their gums. Immediately take your infant off your breast if she tries to bite you – this will help her learn how to suck the milk without teething. Keep reading more books and rhymes to boost their listening skills. Allow them to play with materials of different textures and allow them the world of different touchy feeling. Continue tummy time to make your kid stronger. It is also important to make lot of skin contact with your baby now, maybe by giving some soothing oil massage while you are talking to her and listen to her coo and talk with you.
